LEXINGTON, Ky. – A beautiful morning at Keeneland Race Course, after biblical rain the last few days, took a disappointing turn Thursday when it was announced that Beholder is scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The mare was found after her workout to have bled. The hope is still to race her next year, but trainer Richard Mandella said it necessitates the Classic scratch. Does this mean that the path for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s a so-called racing “Grand Slam” is easier? Probably, but I’m going to take some time to digest that.
For now, here are a few thoughts on what looks to be a chalky Prelude to the Cup racing card at Keeneland today, featuring the resurrection of the Lafayette Stakes that hasn’t been run since 2008.
Race 6: Clearly Confused looms as a little bit of a price against House of Sole.
Race 8: Doubledown Again has been claimed in his last two starts and I’ll bet at the 4-1 morning line price.
