New York joins Churchill in viewing replay show as outdated

KT-178_TV_cameraSeveral moons ago, Google isn’t telling me exactly when, Churchill Downs killed its daily racing replay show in favor of an online and in-house handicapping feature. Among the many changes at Churchill over the years, this one didn’t get a whole lot of kickback (though I do believe there was a little). After all, this was well into the era where most every race was live on a cable channel.

Flash forward to the Daily Racing Form reporting now that the New York Racing Association has decided to end its venerable daily recap show. It’s doubtful anyone will notice, for the same reasons that few noticed when Churchill did it.

Growing up, the Churchill show was required viewing – as often as I could – during the racing seasons (at one point, I believe, it was hosted by now-congressman John Yarmuth). But times change. Right now, I’d bet most off-track bettors are watching one of the TVG channels. As the way consumers watch races continues to evolve, though, how long until we don’t even watch races live on cable? Some people already are there.
