Blue Grass winner Irap wouldn’t be first to win second race in Kentucky Derby

Irap wins the 93rd Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Race Course, the first maiden to win the Kentucky Derby prep.

Reddam Racing’s Irap became the first maiden to win the Grade II Toyota Blue Grass in the race’s 93-year history, which earned the colt a shot in the 143rd Kentucky Derby. Now Irap tries to become the first Derby winner to be winning just his second race since Giacomo in 2005.

Of course, Giacomo was 50.30-1 when he won the 2005 Derby with his only prior victory being a maiden score at Santa Anita the year before.

Since 2000, 40 horses sought their second career win (of 322 starters in that period) in the Derby (which excludes one maiden to run). That accounts for 12 percent of starters (and 6 percent of the Derby winners).

The list includes a wide range of horses, some very good, some meh. Four went on to win the Belmont Stakes. While only Giacomo won on the first Saturday in May, the Derby results for the rest were all over the board — including an astounding four second-place finishes and three last-place finishes. Most had high odds and those that hit the board paid their backers well.

Below is a year-by-year listing of the horses that ran in the Derby with just one win, their odds (two in 2000 were parts of mutuel entries) and where they finished.
