Race 11 | Grade I Belmont Stakes | 1 1/2 miles
2. War of Will
3. Intrepid Heart
4. Master Fencer
Comment: Tacitus was my Kentucky Derby pick and who knows what happens in a cleanly run race. What I do know is Tacitus’s chances were severely compromised trying to find a spot to settle in on the run to the first turn. He made a nice move in the Derby in spite of that start. With a better trip, which should be achievable, Tacitus is the most logical to prevail. Preakness Stakes winner War of Will is the next most logical, but the bet will be to give the edge to the fresher horse. That said, both will be used (almost exclusively) in multi-race exotics. The class gap to the rest of the field is significant. Intrepid Heart could add some value to the trifecta. The favorite in the Grade 2 Peter Pan stumbled at the start, still finished third and, with two wins before that has every shot to hit the board. Master Fencer was respectable in the Derby to my surprise and can be used in exotics. Everfast was a Preakness surprise and still would be a surprise to win, but is capable of being in exotics.
